Endangered Species

Piping Plover and Least Tern

Each year from March to June, two endangered species - the Piping Plover and Least Tern - return to Sea Girt's coastal shore to nest and raise their young. Sea Girt is dedicated to the conservation and protection of these vulnerable, young flightless birds through careful stewardship of their natural habitat, and continuous implementation of measures that protect the quality of life during their beach nesting period.

Sea Girt's continued commitment to complying with Endangered Species laws and dedication to protecting the plovers and terns is evident by the erecting of special fences and cages, employing volunteer patrols, and applying certain restrictions on beach use - including kayaking, surfing and lifeguard training - while the birds are nesting. Once the chicks have fledged and can fly safely away from predators and other dangers these restriction are lifted to allow residents and visitors to fully partake in the activities that were previously banned or limited.
